The most recent issue of Doctor Who Magazine revealed the results of the biggest fan survey ever conducted – announcing what DWM readers think are the best stories of the first 50 years!
The full results, featuring the chart placings of all 241 stories, can be found inside issue 474. The Top 10 Doctor Who stories of all time were revealed as…
1 THE DAY OF THE DOCTOR (2013)
2 BLINK (2007)
3 GENESIS OF THE DALEKS (1975)
4 THE CAVES OF ANDROZANI (1984)
5 CITY OF DEATH (1979)
6 THE TALONS OF WENG-CHIANG (1977)
7 THE EMPTY CHILD/THE DOCTOR DANCES (2005)
8 PYRAMIDS OF MARS (1975)
9 HUMAN NATURE/THE FAMILY OF BLOOD (2007)
10 REMEMBRANCE OF THE DALEKS (1988)
The winning story was the epic 50th Anniversary Special, broadcast on 23 November 2013, starring Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt, as three incarnations of the Doctor joining forces on the darkest day of his lives.
Steven Moffat, the writer of the story, commented, ‘Thank you. Thank you so very much. I am an ageing Doctor Who fan, and I can promise you that no other award has meant half as much to me as this one.’
Before the results were announced, we teased you with various questions about the poll – and we can now reveal the answers:
Which classic twentieth-century story hits the Top Five for the first time ever?
Which adventure shoots up the list to become the top story of the Second Doctor’s era?
Which two recurring monsters see their every appearance land inside the Top 75?
Which two Doctors find an incredible 50% of their stories land inside the top third of the poll?
Meanwhile, DWM readers also voted on their favourite Doctor – and the winner, with a convincing margin, was Tom Baker (Doctor Number Four), who celebrated his 80th birthday earlier in the year.
On receiving the award, a thrilled Tom Baker beamed, “Wow! Do you think this will advance my career?”
