By the start of 1989, John Nathan-Turner had been the producer of Doctor Who for almost a decade. The 26th season of the show was in pre-production, and would begin shooting the following month, with transmission following in the autumn of that year. It would turn out to be the final series of Doctor Who to be produced for more than 15 years. However, John Nathan-Turner wouldn’t live to see the show return to our screens in 2005 – he sadly passed away on 1 May 2002, at the age of just 54.
Oxford University student Adam Stephens had approached the Doctor Who production office with a request to interview JN-T – as he was usually known – in the autumn of 1988. The interview took place in February 1989, conducted by Adam and his friend, fellow student Matthew Brookes. However, the resulting piece remained untranscribed and unpublished until now – with the whole chat appearing in print in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, on sale now.
DWM is delighted to present a short sound extract from the interview…
